Egg Harbor

Wisconsin.

Not to be confused with Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey.

We travelled up to Egg Harbor via Oshkosh and Green Bay.

When my boys were little, the rich kids had Oshkosh clothes, so I’ve known about Oshkosh.

It was pretty cool to go through the town.

We were considering hitting up an Oshkosh store. Just because. But got distracted by Sheels.

And Ice Skates.

I do love Sheels. They have all sorts of goodies including Aussie Ugg Boots and a two story fake tree.

And guns. I didn’t take pictures this time of guns.

They disappoint me.

Speaking of which…..’twas a very disappointed MoD when he found that Sheels didn’t have the skates he wanted in stock.

Fortunately the lady at the counter (cause of course we did buy ‘stuff’ at Sheels) told us to head to EJ Arena Sports and Emboridery.

A disenchanted but always positive MoD decided it was worth a try.

An hour and a half later we came out with skates, a mouth guard, tape and two hockey sticks.

Our work here was done.

We continued north to Egg Harbor.

I really can’t spell harbor without a ‘U’…..its just……well wrong (harboUr).

Egg Harbor – without the U – is a cute little village set up on a peninsula in Door County.

Interesting name and of course everything in the village appears to be Hatch or Egg related.

Some say the village was named after a nest of eggs found on the shore by Door County’s first settler. Others say it received its name because seagulls nested along the shore and you could gather a basket of eggs from their nests. The story we read down by the Marina was that a number of Mackinac boats left Green Bay to deliver furs to the trading post on Mackinac Island. The boats stopped at the yet unnamed harbor to rest for the night. While rowing ashore, there was a race to see who would reach the shore first. The winning boat was pelted with eggs by the other boats, the winning boat returning fire. With eggs. I wondered why they had so many eggs on hand…..

The village was then named after that legendary egg battle.

So the story goes.

The place was humming when we arrived so we decided – given it was eating time – we would go to the market and have a picnic on our rather nice balcony at The Landing, where we stayed for the night.

Whilst other tourists might be at the marina watching the sunset, there we were – my bad – spending precious tourist time walking through that market marvelling at what they sell.

Next morning we headed out for an explore before heading back to Green Bay.

It’s an interesting place Egg Harbor, without the U.

Clearly crime isn’t an issue. Retail opens at 10am and yet quite a few shops left their goods outside overnight. With the price tags on.

Bikes are just left. Where they were dismounted. To be picked up later and ridden off. Into that sunset. We didn’t see.

Found a great coffee shop called Buttercups on Main Street where they took my photo. Because I am from NZ. Not because I am Australian. Very disappointing. Lucky they had nice coffee. Same coffee shop that had Bon Jovi and Jimmy Buffett signed guitars. And no, Dave the owner told me neither visited for coffee.

On the way out of Egg Harbor, without the U, we stopped at The Pavillion. The local library.

And that’s a whole other story.
