Onwards to Split & Dubrovnik

It was a driving day, it’s late at night as I get around to writing this, so todays’ writing might be less writing and more pictures.

But I will give it my best…..….

Croatia is a country of about 3.85million, at least 1.15 million more than NZ, and yet the roads and infrastructure here are incredible.  We headed up the highway where the speed limit is 130km an hour and yet we were consistently passed by those travelling at least 160km. Because they could. Because the roads are a joy to drive on. Not sure why but an educated guess may be money injected into Croatia since they became part of the EU in 2013.

The temperature is shown on overhead gantry signs every 5km or so – usually sitting around the 25-28 degree mark.

First stop was at a petrol station which happened to have a cafe included. All the locals seemed to be sitting around chatting over their morning coffee. Or maybe their first drink. You could buy alcohol. The system was to purchase your drink of choice in the cafe, get your docket, head out the door and back into the other side of the shop – the petrol side – and pay. Between the two doors you can joyfully access the Cannabis Vending Machine. Handy! Clearly an honour system. We have noticed very trusting people in both Croatia and Slovenia.

Onwards to Split for lunch. Beautiful little place. Extremely touristy and busy. There is a cute little market. I may have bought a frock I didn’t need. Of course it wasn’t about need. I took too many photos. Split is worth a visit.

Onwards to Dubrovnik, with a quick stop for more caffeine at a little coffee shop/winery near Kremena. Wine country.

Views were fabulous, service extremely poor. MoD did say the coffee was good. He needed it, he is doing all the driving on this trip.

Pulled into Dubrovnik around 5. We are staying in a Villa on the main road into the old town. It’s four floors to essentially get up to our third floor room. There is no lift. My suitcase is 21kg. MoD’s is about 16kg. MoD insisted on taking them both up, said it was his exercise for today, given we had been sitting in a car for some hours. He is such a gentlemen.

He may have regretted that once we started our walk down into old town.

This, and nearly everywhere we have been in Croatia, is not for the faint hearted. Or the old. Or those with bad knees or dicky hips. And definitely not disabled friendly 😞 Dubrovnik, particularly where we are, is a tough gig.

Whatever aches and pains we may have had were completely forgotten when we saw Dubrovnik Old Town.

Absolutely stunning. We mostly wandered into the Main Street of the Old Town – Stradun or Placa, had some dinner and an ice cream, watched the people for a while and headed back to our Villa.

We have bigger plans for tomorrow and potentially I will have more informative writing (aka more energy) so for the moment you will have to contend with the below photos and maybe click on this link to see what this town is all about. Sometimes I am just a total disappointment. But that’s ok. I’m 62. I know my limitations.
